Sealing wax used to seal important documents. Also used by railroad agents to seal important shipments. The wax was heated and stamped with a seal.

When a customer brought a package to be shipped on the railroad, the agent sealed it by melting the wax on a sealer and stamped the package. When the package arrived, the seal proved that it had not been opened.
