Drill chuck has been modified. This type of drill was offered in a blacksmith tool kit by Sears & Roebuck in 1908. It is descibed as a "horizontal Bench Drill."
Description:
Blacksmith horizontal bench drill with hand crank to turn drill and wheel at top to move drill bit up or down by turning. There are no gears so drill turns the same speed as the crank is turned.

KID TALK:
This drill was offered in a less expensive kit of blacksmith tools. Unlike most blacksmith drills that were mounted on a wall or post standing up and down, this drill lay on its side on a bench. There were no gears so the drill moved at the same speed that the handle was turned.
