The metal divider was used to transfer an exact measurement or scribe a circle. To transfer the measurement put the sharp points at each point of measurement and move the divider to the place where the measurement needs to be transferred. This eliminates any error of measurement. A circle is scribed by putting one point in the center and scratching the surface with the other.
