The chamfer knife was a large, heavy wood shaver used to smooth out the uneven ends of wooden barrels. Wooden barrels were made of wood staves held together by a metal band. Barrels were used to ship heavy items and to store liquids. Small barrels were called kegs. A cooper made and repaired barrels.
