With a bow saw tension is applied to the blade by twisting the cord at the top of the saw and securing the wood rod to the cross brace. The saw blade was easily turned making it easy to cut curved surfaces.

Bow saws may look cumbersome, but the small blade enabled the user to see exactly where the cut was made and it could easily be used to cut curves in the wood. The cord at the top was twisted to tighten the blade.
