Broad hatchet with one flat surface enabling blade to swing flush along a surface for shaping, dimensioning, and smoothing wood. It is possible this tool was used in the building of the F. J. DeKelver's Exchange Hotel in the village of Pike.

The broad hatchet did not have the power of the broadax, but the flat side was useful for shaping or flattening a surface. It flat side could be used to make a point on a stake and the flat end to drive the stake into the ground.
