A half hatchet is similar to shingling and a lathing hatchets. The shingling hatchet has a double flared bit where both the half and lathing hatchets have a bit with straight and flared edges. The bit of the half hatchet is broader than a lathing hatchet.
Description:
A half hatchet with a blade at one end and a hammer head on the other. The blade is notched for pulling nails. It is possible this tool was used in the building of the F. J. DeKelvers Exchange Hotel in the village of Pike.

This hatchet could be used for splitting and nailing cedar shakes on a roof or it could be used to cut and nail lath strips that held plaster on walls. The flat top edge made it possible to use close to a ceiling. The cut on the blade was useful for pulling nails.
