A matched set of two hand planes; one created a groove and the other a tongue; the tongue cut on one board fits into the groove on another to perfectly join the two board together.

This set of wood planes were used to make a tongue and groove for joining two boards. The tongue was the part of the wood that stuck out and slid into the groove of another board. Why do you think the part that stuck out was called a tongue? Be sure and look at both pictures. Can you tell which one was the tongue plane?
