A smoothing plane is bench plane that was used for the final finish on a wood surface. The cutting edge is usually slightly curved to prevent gouging the wood.

A smoothing plane was usually held in the hand to give complete control for smoothing out a piece of wood. Larger smoothing planes like this one had a handle. The blade was adjusted by sliding up or down and tapping the wood wedge that holds it in place.
